February 13, 2018 Meeting

When: Tuesday, February 13, 2018
Where: The Lion’s Den, Exeter
Agenda: 19:00 – A short business meeting followed by our guest speaker.
Topic: Radek Wyrzykowski, EAA Manager of Flight Proficiency, speak about the VMC Club and run a sample VMC Club meeting.  For the VMC Club he prepares a monthly VFR flying scenario in video format, pilots then discuss what they would do if presented with the situation.  The goal is to make flying safer by sharing knowledge and experience. 
Notes: vmc-clubThe VMC Club is modeled after the popular IMC Club concept which provides organized “hangar flying” focused on building proficiency in instrument flying. The VMC Club will do the same, but for pilots who are not instrument rated and fly primarily under visual flight rules and under VMC.
Additional Guest: COPA National Board of Directors elections are coming up and there are 10 candidates running for 3 positions in Southern Ontario. Alex Martins is one of the candidates and he will be joining us to speak from 8-8:30pm. January 9, 2018 Meeting

Topic: Dave Kirby, Fire Patrol with Discovery Air (Sudbury and Thunder Bay).
Notes: Dave will discuss the roles of Detection, Birddog and Tanker Pilots and how they function in detection and control of fires in Northern Ontario.


Youth Scholarship Awarded at COPA / Sexsmith Christmas Party

The 2017 “Fly The Dream” pilot licence scholarship program, worth $2400, was presented to Elijah Stowe, Paris ON. Presenting the award at the association’s recent Christmas gathering are (L-R): Kathy Martin (Mason), Jeremy Mason Memorial; Chris Redfearn, Canadian Owners and Pilots Association (COPA) 177 Exeter; Elijah Stowe, recipient; and Darren Mason, Jeremy Mason Memorial.

The 2017 “Fly the Dream” pilot licence scholarship program, sponsored by Canadian Owners and Pilots Association (COPA) 177, Exeter and the Jeremy Mason Memorial, in memory of Jeremy’s love of flying, was awarded to 16 year old Elijah Stowe of Paris, Ontario.  The $2,400 bursary provides assistance to a worthy young person to help with the cost of earning a Recreational or Private pilot’s licence. Elijah has financed all his flight training at the Brantford Flight Center through summer time jobs and part-time work during the school year. Elijah is currently in grade 11 and volunteers at his church and local sport events. Once he finishes high school, he plans to take aviation at community college with the goal of becoming a professional pilot.  He is currently working on his Private Pilot licence, which he will complete early in 2018. One of his long term goals is to work for Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF), combining his love of aviation with helping people.

Agenda:  Socializing, a great meal, the year in review and the presentation of the “Fly the Dream” Scholarship for 2017, schedules permitting.
Details:  Tickets are $35/person and are available now at Tom’s store, Thomas H Fine Menswear, in Exeter. They will also be available at our meeting this Tuesday, Nov. 14, please plan to pick them up soon so that we know numbers for the caterers.

Donations for the door prize table are also needed, please bring them the night of the Christmas party, the door prizes are a fun addition to the evening.
